About An Ode to Nicholas

I retired on April 1, and my dad passed away two days later. I’ve been doing plenty of soul searching since then. What’s important? How can I make a difference? What do I believe in? The answer to all these questions is KEEN. I hope you will consider joining me in supporting this wonderful organization.

As you might know, our beloved son, Nicholas, was born with a condition we never could diagnose. Nicky could not walk or talk. He spent his life in a wheelchair. He also was an absolute love – the best kid I’ve ever known. And boy did his grandpa Pat love him. During the holiday season of 2011, Nicky slipped into a coma. He passed away on January 10, 2012.

Nicholas continues to be – and I trust this will always remain so – a source of inspiration and enlightenment for us. He was a lovely, blessed soul. And his memory brings us nothing but joy!

One of Nicholas’ favorite activities was attending KEEN sessions at Tilden Middle School. KEEN provides a wonderful, unique suite of services to kids with disabilities. And KEEN was Nicholas’ very first opportunity to hang with teenagers without us hovering about….here’s a picture of Nick having a great time at KEEN. After he passed away, Catherine and I became KEEN volunteers. I ultimately joined the KEEN Board, and two years ago, became the President of KEEN. I believe in KEEN with all my heart.

Please take a look at our website to learn more about KEEN. And please consider making a donation – a gift of any size will be deeply appreciated and help us continue to serve KEEN athletes throughout Maryland, the District and Northern Virginia.
